Urban Dandy Brighton

Glovedup Stockist: Urban Dandy in BrightonAfter graduating from Central Saint Martins, Mark McMahon went head first into fashion, from PR and retail, to journalism and styling for I-D, Sleaze Nation and The Independent newspaper. Mark soon nurtured his own style ideas and in 2002 he launched Urban Dandy; a fusion of formal and casual, street and posh, machismo and elegance. "I wanted to reinvigorate the emblematic appeal of the t-shirt, make sweats and hoodies striking, experimental and exciting again - which can only be achieved by treating fabrics as the coolest, quirkiest kind of canvas".

From sweats to shop.
Named and inspired by the ethos of McMahon's label, Urban Dandy the boutique, opened its doors in May 2003 in the South Lanes of Brighton (London-on-sea). As well as promoting his own range, the store showcases the work of fellow 'up and coming' designers: Adam Lemmer, Glovedup fingerless gloves, Jacey Withers, Kirt Holmes, Pokit, Unconditional, Ziad Ghanem. The walls are bedecked with the works of talented new photographers, writers and artists.
The Face, InStyle, Arena, Heat, Boyz, Men’s Health, Pure, Juice and Rwd magazines have all given the thumbs up to Brighton's full-on fashion boutique. UK designer Matthew Williamson made a beeline after seeing a pink print UD-tee in a mag, and Britney Spears, fresh from locking lips with Madonna, rewarded herself with some juicy jewellery.

Glovedup at Genart and Heatherette New York Fashion Week

The story started at the end of July when Mary Gehlhar from Genart emailed us to say we'd been chosen as 1 of the 4 accessory designers for their Fresh Faces in Fashion show at New York fashion week in September.

Glovedup at Fresh Faces in Fashion NY Sept 03Fri 12th: Armed with a ream of photocopies, tape and scissors, we arrive at Manhattan's Grand Ballroom to build our stand. Having given great thought to how we might present ourselves, we go DIY: we make a big pile of gloves and gear (flea market stylee) and a picture wall from B/W photocopies of our glove pictures. Later at the show, the crowds get right into our pile (fully encouraged by us) and try on our wares. Still on the photocopy theme, we launch our first G-Love magazine, though our back page advert for spoof band 'Crack Granny' seems to cause some confusion: "is this your agent?" We talk to some very interesting people including: designer Amy Chan who has her own store on Mulberry St, and Yana who is styling the forthcoming Heatherette show with Patti Wilson.

Sat 13th: On our 'day-off' we hit the streets by foot to discover the Meatpacking district, Soho, Tribeca and make a beeline for our favourite Manhattan bar. We revel in the opulent setting of the beer garden which is fenced against an ever busy cross street, over the top of the occasionally noisy and windy subway grills: class! Here we meet Amanda who tells us the bar is a local haunt of the Strokes, and later invites us to a party in Brooklyn. How can we decline? So we find ourselves in a converted warehouse dance studio apartment, in an area of Brooklyn that reminds us of Manchester on this drizzly wet night. And in the early hours we dance (carefully) on the pitched-roof overlooking the BQE (Brooklyn Queens Expressway): more class.

YanaSun 14th: Yana invites us round to Heatherette's studio to meet Patti Wilson, Richie Rich and Traver Rains. Once again we find ourselves standing around a big a pile of gloves we've made on the floor, while choices are made for Heatherette's show on Tuesday. We've been admiring Heatherette for some time, so this was real buzz for us!

Mon 15th: The New York Sun newspaper does an article on glove etiquette: thankfully the paragraph about our fingerless gloves is excluded from the otherwise archaic fashion rules cited in the remainder. At last we climb the Empire State building and do a quick photo shoot with the Wendy gloves.

Glovedup gloves for Heatherette SS2004Tues 16th: We hire bikes to get a real taste of big apple. This is a good move as we have errands to run and lots of them. We visit Amy Chan at her store (former HQ of mafia boss John Gotti) on 247 Mulberry Street, which is going to be the New York home for our gear. Next we spin over to Bleeker St to watch the show of Harrison Wong, styled by Jon Tan. Finally, we head over to join, and then mercifully skip, the bustling queue forming for Heatherette's show at MAOPR. We're directed into the standing area, where Laura's Brigandage airline batwing fingerless gloves are ripped out of a fan which nearly took in her arm. Of course she puts them back on now they've been properly 'ripped to shreds'. Somehow we're in the right place, at the right time, to get an unfilled seat. Armed with our cameras and high on excitement, we positively beam and snap with delight, to see the foxy models in our gloves past and present

Thanks to Craigslist.org - for finding us apartments to rent. Thanks to photographer Noah Kalina for renting his apartment to us. Thanks to Monique for helping us out. Thanks to Amanda. Thanks to the Brooklyn party people and especially the hosts. Thanks to Genart.org for bringing us to Fresh Faces in Fashion and thanks to the enthusiastic crowd we met there. Thanks to Yana, Patti and Heatherette.com. Thanks to Amy Chan for welcoming our gloves to New York. And thanks to the bloke with the reefer, we shared outside the Genart party beforing hitting Orchard street for late night drinks with our Dutch colleagues; Caroline and Hein, otherwise known as Studiostraks.

Le Shop Stockholm04/05/03

Le Shop in Stockholm

We were thrilled when Cecilia and Payman contacted us to get some of our gear for their new store Le Shop Stockholm, and very disappointed to miss their opening party, especially when we saw the pictures (click on the thumbnail to view).

Payman and Cecilia met in 1997 and have been a couple ever since. Their shared fashion obsession and disappointment with what was on offer in Stockholm brought Cecilia's dream of opening a boutique in Stockholm's Söder area, into reality in April 2003.

Le Shop Stockholm was a name they chose a few years ago, reflecting their love of the French language, but that's where the French theme ends. Their hand-picked collection (they choose what they want to wear) of street and ready-to-wear labels come from designers based all over the world: 8 by Tracy Kinney (NY), Buddhist Punk (London/Bali), Warren Noronha (London), Baby Phat (US), Keanan Duffty (NY), Random (UK), Yoko Devereaux (NY), Etienne Ozeki (London/Hong Kong), Somét (Hong Kong), Bedro (Stockholm), Hanna Hammarberg (London) and Eric So (Hong Kong), and of course our own Glovedup and Agent Anonym creations. Alongside the fashion you can also find cool lifestyle stuff such as designer toys, music, graffiti art and other individual items they seek out.

What makes Le Shop special is their desire to work with small independent creators far from the mainstream, "Wherever we find creativity and good vibes!". Just the kind of store we're proud to work with.

We wish Cecilia, Payman and Le Shop great success, though from the reactions they've been getting from the press and the Stockholm shoppers, it doesn't look like they need it!

Glovedup fingerless gloves at London Fashion Week For Victim Fashion St

Once again our gloves were part of London label victim's catwalk show last week. Very sadly we couldn't be there but our spies provided us with a few pics. Sparra was created from the fabric we use for the solange gloves - but we added some of victim's retro fabric and turned the gloves into a fly-away jacket.

Breakdancers get Glovedup in URB magazine

Back in 2002 we were contacted by Brooklyn based stylist Anika Haslewood - who wanted to borrow some gloves for a shoot. She was going to be styling some top women breakdancers so we sent over a whole stack and were so pleased to see the results in February 2003's URB magazine. These ladies can model our gear anytime!

Glovedup fingerless gloves at London Fashion Week with Victim

Glovedup gloves for Victim Fashion St SS2003We've been selling our gloves at the Victim boutique on London's Fashion St for a while now, and were thrilled when Victim designer Mei Hui Liu asked us to do some gloves for her show at London fashion week. When we asked what she wanted, Mei Hui just said crazy - and the Airline batwing gloves were born. This was also about the time we created our first collection of garters, but the Victim team didn't know they were for legs, and so the model strutted down the catwalk wearing her garter as a choker - and why not!

Glovedup makes fingerless gloves for Julien Macdonald

Glovedup gloves for Julien Macdonald SS2003We were planning a long cycle ride from Amsterdam to Berlin in late August, until we got an email from Julien Macdonald's office (yes he's the head designer at Givenchy). They wanted us to help them produce gloves for the VIPs at Julien's own label SS2003 London show. So the dreams of a holiday were quickly forgotten, and we set to work producing some spunky cycling gloves. Of course we took time out to see his show extravaganza, with 1000 guests and Naomi Campbell strutting her stuff on the shocking pink runway.
